Love
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
This verse is so familiar it is hard to actually read. It turns up on placards at sporting events, which is a strange fate for a sentence about someone dying.
Try the grammar instead. “So loved” is not a measure of intensity, it is a measure of manner: loved in this way, and here is the way. Everything after the comma is the demonstration. The love is not asserted and then left to be taken on trust. It is cashed out in the same sentence.
“Whosoever” was doing something specific when this was written down. The conversation it belongs to is with a religious insider, at night, and the word deliberately does not have a border on it.
